Cold Cathode Lighting
All neon lighting is actually cold cathode lighting, however, the name has become associated with tubing larger than 15 mm and is widely used in architectural and indirect lighting. The most common sizes are 18, 22, and 25 mm. Many colors are available.

Because of the large diameter of the glass, processing requires special consideration. First, a larger bombarder is required to bring the finished tubing up to processing temperature, without over-processing the emission coating on the electrodes. Sometimes a flushing gas must be used to aid in heating the glass. Secondly, a high volume manifold and pumping system is required to process the tubing, while still at processing temperature. This usually requires a roughing pump in series with a turbo-molecular or diffusion pump. Thirdly, gauges and meters to monitor the entire process are a must.
Cold cathode lighting enjoys the same longevity as other neon products, is inexpensive to operate, virtually maintenance free, and provides unique and simplified solutions to those tough lighting problems. As with all neon products, it must be installed by a professional.
